IntroductionBunting's Wood is an area of former agricultural land
which was purchased by Thorne-Moorends Town Council in
1993 to create a community woodland, and is now a full decade old! The ambitious project covering 32 Hectares is now beginning take shape. With the final stage of the main tree planting completed in the winter of 2001 it's time to sit back, relax and watch the tree grow. If only that was true! Bunting's Wood needs a as much, if not more, care at this stage of its life. The Friends continue to offer this through practical work and promotional activities. Thorne-Moorends Town Council, with the help of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council Woodland Department and grant assistance from the Forestry Commission, have endeavoured to enhance the local recreational environment for residents and visitors alike. A huge debt of gratitude is owed to many many people and organisations in getting the wood to it's current state; not least of which is to the people of Thorne and Moorends and the surrounding districts who have given of their time to help, not just practically but with donations of knowledge and advice, historical details, comments and observations: not to mention the trees, flowers and bulbs donated for the Adopt an Area plot and other areas of the wood. The site is also used as an educational resource; running guided walks for a variety of groups from local residents and school children to further education, undergraduate and post graduate students. Friends of Bunting's Wood (FOBWO)An organisation called Friends of Bunting's Wood (FOBWO) has been set up to look after and promote the Community Woodland. The group meets on the first and third Sunday of every month. The Friends undertake practical work as well as promoting the site. Adopt-an-AreaBecause of the size of the wood and the number of trees planted, machinery is used to suppress weed growth. There is an area known as 'Adopt-an-Area' which is managed by the Friends. Individuals can plant or donate their own trees in this area, safe in the knowledge that weed management takes place by hand. A growing tree consumes four times more carbon dioxide than a mature tree thereby decreasing the greenhouse effect. To help your tree to grow why not get a tree tube available from FOBWO. The Friends are more than willing to offer assistance and advice.
Walks and TalksAs part of the Friends remit, “We talk at your place, you walk at ours” see contacts.
Volunteer Wardens WantedDo you walk down to the wood regularly? Could you help by being our eyes and ears? Just passing on observations can help ensure problems can be dealt with quickly. Please contact us if you would like to help.
