Reports For 2008
WORK REPORT FOR 20th January 2008 The volunteers examined the possibility of building the kissing gate to replace the stile on the gate in the car park, in the light of the failed Coalfield Regeneration Trust Grant Application, and decided that this would be possible, they also made suggestions for simplifying the design. This was followed by a walk of the site to observe the current state of the wood as is our custom at the start of each new year, to plan out and make suggestions for the coming years work requirements, and jobs for three University of Hull Degree students’ work placements due to start in February. COMMENTS The gates on the access track are not locked, however having heard from the wife of Alan that he is indisposed we are currently unsure how to proceed in this matter. Freddie Whitehead 4/Feb/08 WORK REPORT FOR 3rd February 2008 The entire Adopt a Tree area previously planted, and a strip for this years planting , were strimmed and raked to clear rank matted grass and weeds. Certain self set trees were felled, after discussion between the volunteers, from the new strip. The Hedge along the edge of the area, which has had stakes removed by vandals/thieves was partially restaked and various minor “housekeeping tasks” like removing old rubber tree ties were done. The Students, JFW and CFN went on to work bagging up and removing the remaining tree guards from the site in three trips to the Bootham Lane disposal site. There are two builders’ sacks of tree guards still to be removed from the site. The Students also began selective felling of trees in the area next to where the guards had been stacked in area 4a. CFN and JFW took the students on a short walk over of area six, linking into the University Assessment briefs, and to further familiarise them with the site. COMMENTS This was a very good task which achieved all of the objectives intended and more. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Three motor cycles rode through the site close to where CFN, JFW and the students were working with three adult riders and two young children riding on their petrol tanks.
WORK REPORT FOR 17th February 2008 The volunteers worked on the area for this years Adopt a Tree planting. The area was closely strimmed, and existing trees were felled, with the brash and cut grass being stacked under the hedge at the rear of the area. The stumps of the felled trees were cut and treated with chemicals to prevent them re-growing. General maintenance of the whole area was also the order of the day, with weeding, polishing of plaques, checking and where necessary replacing of tree ties and guards. The two trees to be dedicated in the Adopt an Existing Tree scheme on 16th March were picked out and marked with string. COMMENTS The stakes and guards from the trees planted by the Brownies in the Adopt a Tree area have been stolen and will need to be replaced. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 29th January 2008: BTCV Green Gym (2 staff and 12 volunteers) attended the site to continue the planting from the 14th December 2007 ACEVO tree planting day. 6th February 2008: The three work placement students and 10 students with 2 staff from the University of Hull fisheries department worked on Perches pond, using boats and wet suits to remove approximately 20% of the reed from Perches pond. Willow was removed from around the pond banks with the cut brash and timber intended to be used for dead hedging. 12th February 2008: 9 University of Hull students with 1 member of staff attended the site, pruning thinning and coppicing an area of hazel for their practical assessment. BTCV Green Gym (10 volunteers and 2 staff) finished of the tree planting. Concerns were raised by volunteers about the visual impact of the work done on Perches pond, it was agreed to delay further Willow removal until after a report has been produced by the Ponds Trust. CFN announced a successful bid for £3,500 from Ponds Conservation. CFN met with Ian Harrison to discuss a letter of support for a grant bid to complete pond work. Also was informed of the sad news of the death of Alan Robison. CFN is to attend his funeral on 15th February as a representative of FOBWO. The Friends will plant a tree and erect a plaque in the Adopt a Tree area as a tribute to the help that Alan gave. In light of the above CFN discussed the situation about the gates and their locks with Pete the Water Bailiff who has ordered another lock to replace the one on the gate on the main drive. 13th February 2008: CFN spoke to Max of Hazel Lodge PRU, who mentioned that he had been working on the site on 24th and 31st January and 7th February. CFN agreed to meet him on 21st February. Max from Hazel Lodge PRU told CFN that he will be attending the wood for a further 4 or 5 work sessions, after which he will be reconsidering his professional situation. 14th February 2008: CFN and JFW attended a course about the Independent Safeguarding Authority scheme organised by Doncaster CVS to assess the impact of this new legislation on the FOBWO volunteers. University of Hull students working on Bunting’s wood as a Work Placement have attended the site on the following dates 3rd February, 11th February and 17th February. They have begun their familiarisation with the site, and helped with removal of the guards left from the Lombard Volunteering week. They also joined the other University of Hull Students on 6th February in undertaking work around Perches pond. Freddie Whitehead 17/Feb/08
